French architect Jean Nouvel has three works in Shanghai: the Start Museum, Henderson Cifi Tiandi, and the Pudong Art Museum featured in this article.
The description of this building is already extensively available online, so this article mainly focuses on photographic images.
Located at the core of the Huangpu River waterfront, the Pudong Art Museum is defined by the architect as a “territory.”

Poetry, the second layer of context that Jean Nouvel infuses into architecture.
“The domain is mediated by four hectares of warm white granite.”
Nouvel’s use of white granite and glass curtain walls for the building’s surfaces gives it a modern feel, which is well-suited for such a geographic location.
I really admire its stacked and staggered architectural arrangement. Modern architecture primarily features rectangular elements, but the addition of stacked squares significantly enhances the building’s aesthetic appeal. While the Pudong Art Museum fully embraces this design on its roof and interior, the museum’s facade appears somewhat rigid, consisting mainly of large rectangular panels.
- Interior of the building.
The Marxist lighting adds to the beauty of the interior, giving the museum space more depth and vitality.
On the day of the shoot, the focus was on “Xu Bing: Gravity Theatre.”
The large central exhibition hall provides ample space for creators to unleash their imagination.
The large glass curtain wall of the “Mirror Hall” is also a major highlight of the architecture. Due to limited materials, we won’t showcase it extensively here.
