Jean Nouvel’s inspiration comes from the reimagining of Shanghai’s lane elements and natural environment. The Bund Finance Center is situated in the prime location of Shanghai’s central urban area – the Xintiandi district. Nouvel aims to create a unique open neighborhood, known as the “Thousand Red Cans Block,” in the Huaihai Road commercial area by carefully controlling various details.
Throughout the vertical and horizontal dimensions of the building, flowers, shrubs, and greenery abound, enveloping the entire structure in a sea of greenery, forming both horizontal and vertical gardens.[1]
Two lush rooftop gardens open up to the sky. These spaces serve as both public gathering areas and new places for nearby residents to stroll and contemplate. The Huaihai Road project is a green community, serving as a green lung in the heart of downtown Shanghai. The extensive use of greenery not only adds color to the architecture but also injects vitality and energy into the entire neighborhood.
The use of different colors better adapts to the urban fabric and seamlessly integrates into the surrounding city environment.
On the basement level, there’s the Er Shu Bookstore, adorned with hand-drawn sketches by Nouvel.
